PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording apparatus which detects a defective nozzle to perform the restoring operation only of a defective head including the defective nozzle and obtains a recording image having good quality without increasing a running cost. SOLUTION: In the ink jet recording apparatus having a plurality of recording heads, the pressurizing motors provided to the recording heads are driven selectively and independently. Further, the ink jet recording apparatus has a head scanning means, a discharge state detecting means, a means for performing preparatory discharge, a test discharge means, a discharge state analyzing means and a control means for controlling recording on the basis of an analyzed result.
