PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photograph taking device capable of realizing accurate focus detection without depending on the luminance of a subject. SOLUTION: The photograph taking device is equipped with an optical system including lenses 1a and 1b and a shape variable mirror 15 changing the shape of its reflection surface in accordance with an applied driving signal, a CCD 3 photoelectrically converting a subject image formed by the optical system, a signal processing part 5 performing specified signal processing to an imaging signal outputted from the CCD 3, a mirror control part 16 generating the driving signal applied to the mirror 15, and a CPU 11 controlling the control part 16. Before photographing, the CPU 11 controls the control part 16 so that the specified driving signal by which the focal position of the optical system is not drastically defocused may be applied to the mirror 15.
