PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically estimate the shape of a target ship based on a synthetic aperture radar image. SOLUTION: A ship shape estimator 1 is a device for estimating a shape of a target ship on the earth's surface according to a synthetic aperture radar image of the earth's surface. The estimator 1 comprises a ship area determination section (determination means) 5, a brightness shape estimation section (calculation means) 6, a reference function storage section (storage section) 7, and a ship shape estimation section (cross section calculating means) 8. The ship area determination section (determination means) 5 determines a pixel area of the target ship depending on the brightness difference of each pixel of a cut pictorial image I of a synthetic aperture radar image. The brightness shape estimation section (calculation means) 6 calculates the grand total of brightness of the determined pixel area of the target ship. The reference function storage section (storage means) 7 stores as a reference function, function data representing a relational expression between the grand total brightness of a pixel area and the cross section of an ordinary ship, which are obtained from synthetic aperture radar images of a plurality of sample ships having a preliminarily known cross section. The ship shape estimation section (cross section estimating means) 8 calculates the cross section of the target ship as information expressing the shape of the target ship based on the brightness grand total of the pixel area of the target ship calculated by the brightness shape estimation section (calculation means) 6 with the reference function stored in the reference function storage section 7.
