PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove dirt from a thermal head without using a cleaning sheet. SOLUTION: A polishing function is imparted by adding polishing agent to the circumferential surface of a platen roller 21. The platen roller 21 is connected with a carrying motor 16 through an electromagnetic clutch 53. Before a recording sheet 10 is fed, the platen roller 21 is brought into pressure contact with the heating element array 23 in a thermal head 20. Under that state, the electromagnetic clutch 53 is turned on to rotate the carrying motor 16 reversely thus rotating the platen roller 21. Power is supplied to the heating element array 23 at that time and the temperature thereof is raised to a level optimal for cleaning. When the platen roller 21 slides on the heating element array 23, dirt adhering to the heating element array 23 is dropped off and the cleaning operation is carried out.
