PATH TRACE METHOD AND APPARATUS

Without performing a path trace using the J1 byte portion between path end devices in an optical transmission network, an intermediate path trace is performed between the line end devices located inside between the path end devices so as to perform an erroneous setting check (conductivity check). At a predetermined first line end device, a predetermined trace code is inserted into a predetermined byte portion of the transmission frame format and at a predetermined second line end device, data of a predetermined byte portion is extracted, so that the data is compared to an expectation value corresponding to the predetermined trace code. Moreover, line end devices other than the line end devices of the transmission side and the reception side pass the aforementioned predetermined byte portion as it is.
