PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating heavy oil with supercritical water or subcritical water so as to separate vanadium in the heavy oil from the oil. SOLUTION: The method comprises reacting a heavy oil containing vanadium with the supercritical water or the subcritical water to separate the vanadium and removing the separated vanadium by a scavenger. The apparatus is equipped with a reactor for reacting the heavy oil containing vanadium with the supercritical water or the subcritical water, and a device for scavenging vanadium and for contacting the processed product discharged from the reactor to remove the vanadium contained in the processed product.
