A lambda control unit (LCU) (1) has a limiting step (LS) (1.1.) for LCU lift (LCUL). An adapting device (AD) (3) causes additive and multiplicative adjustments in adapting a mixture. Fed with adapting data (fra,rka) received by the AD, a limiting device (4) uses the adapting data and other data to form limiting data to be fed to the LCU so as to alter the LCUL's limitation caused by the LS.
