The present invention relates to a phthalamide derivative represented by general formula (I): wherein each of R<1>, R<2 >and R<3>, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom, a (C1-C6)alkyl group, a (C3-C6)alkenyl group or a (C3-C6)alkynyl group; each of X and Y<3>, which may be the same or different, is a halogen atom; each of Y<1 >and Y<2>, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a nitro a cyano group, a (C1-C6)alkyl group or the like; and n is an integer of 0 to 2; and an agricultural and horticultural insecticide containing said compound as an active ingredient and a method of using the same.
