PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high strength wire rod which modifies the surface by performing an ultrasonic shock treating-working on the surface of the wire rod, steel wire, etc. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the wire rod, the surface layer part of the material is made to be high strength modified into fine structure to desirably≥20μm thickness from the uppermost surface part, by performing the ultrasonic shock treatment from one direction or plurality of directions at the right angle or at inclined angle to the peripheral surface of the material during its running after drawing in the producing process of the wire rod or the steel wire, desirably by performing any working of an ultrasonic hammering shock work or an ultrasonic shot-peening shock work. Further, this producing method has the peculiarity in which the above ultrasonic shock treatment is continuously performed at the different portion of the material during its running.
