In the present invention, there is disclosed the use of a nicotine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or derivative thereof together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier in the preparation of a medicament for administering to the rectum, colon and/or terminal ileum of a patient for the treatment, or prophylaxis or remission of inflammatory bowel disease. Disclosed is also a nicotine and a carbomer complex being made by combining 1 part of nicotine with from 0.1 to 100 parts of carbomer, as well as a process for preparing thereof wherein the complex is prepared by a process comprising mixing carbomer with a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent; and adding nicotine to carbomer-solvent mixture. Further disclosed is a rectally administrable pharmaceutical composition or post-gastric delayed release pharmaceutical composition comprising nicotine, a salt, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
