PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to improve the luminance of the LCD according to a method of sequentially driving lamps of a back light unit. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for driving an LCD includes a lamp housing(122), a plurality of lamps(130,132), and a lamp driver. The plurality of lamps are arranged in at least one row in the lamp housing. The lamps are arranged in the first and second rows. Current supplied to the lamps arranged in the first row is larger than current provided to the lamps arranged in the second row. The lamp driver sequentially turns on/off parts of the plurality of lamps and drives the other lamps to be in ON state all the time. The lamp driver includes the first driver for sequentially turning on/off the lamps and the second driver for driving the lamps to be in ON state.
