An image forming apparatus, comprising an image reading section for reading an image on a document and for outputting image data corresponding to the read image, an image processing section for processing the image data, an image forming section for forming an image on a sheet on the basis of the processed image data, a post processing device having a stapling stand on which sheets can be placed, a conveying means for conveying the sheets to the stapling stand, and a stapling means for stapling the sheets at a predetermined position on the stapling stand. The stapling means includes a stapling mechanism that is movable in the width direction of the sheets placed on the stapling stand. A stapling position-selecting means is provided for selecting a stapling position on the document. The image processing section is adapted to determine whether the orientation of the image to be formed on the sheet by the image forming section is to be rotated based on the selected stapling position, and, if the image processing section determines that the orientation of the image is to be rotated, is adapted to process the image data to rotate the orientation of the image to be formed on the sheet by the image forming section prior to use in the image forming section so that the selected stapling position on the sheet coincides with the predetermined position on the stapling stand.
