A mixer assembly for a gas turbine engine combustor (16), includes a premixer (42), an air swirler (60) for channeling fluid flow therethrough into the premixer (42), a dome plate (40) extending downstream from the air swirler (60), and a heat shield (180) extending downstream from at least one of the air swirler (60) and the dome plate (40). The heat shield (180) includes a downstream side (188) and an upstream side (186). At least one of the premixer (42) and the dome plate (40) includes at least one cooling opening (150) that is configured to receive cooling fluid for impingement cooling at least a portion of the heat shield (180).
