PURPOSE: A portable electronic device and an embodying method thereof are provided to detect reliably water by ratifying the existence of water based on simultaneous activation of all the capacitive sensors. CONSTITUTION: A portable electronic device(1) includes an electronic circuit(4) with a data processing unit, a power supply part(8) for supplying power to the electronic circuit, an assembly for enclosing the electronic circuit, a detecting part, and a pressure sensor. The assembly includes a glass(3) and a case(2). The detecting part includes a plurality of capacitive sensors. Each capacitive sensor includes a capacitor. An electrode(5) is used as one plate of the capacitor. The capacitance of each capacitor is capable of varying according to the change of characteristics of an outer medium. The detecting part is periodically activated to measure capacitances of the capacitors. The pressure sensor(12) is operated in surface or dive modes according to the measured capacitances.
