PURPOSE: A method for processing an IP in a small-sized wired/wireless ATM exchange is provided to analyze an IP packet to support communication through an ARP(Address Resolution Process) without converting the IP packet if IP packet data is on the same subnet, and to segment the data if the data is on other subnet, then to reassemble the data in an SAR unit, thereby easily accessing an IP network. CONSTITUTION: An IP interface processes a portion of an IP switch function(ST11). If a packet cannot be processed(ST12), the IP interface transmits the packet to a CPU(ST13). The CPU analyzes an IP header(ST14), and decides whether to deliver data to an LAN or a WAN(ST15). If the data is to be delivered to the LAN, the CPU retrieves an IP address on the same subnet through an Ethernet interface(ST16). The CPU performs a switching process for setting a communication path(ST17). If the WAN, the CPU looks up the IP packet data for ATM switching and selects a routing protocol path(ST18). The CPU processes the data in SAR method(ST19), and delivers the processed data through a frame relay network(ST20).
