PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorption type steering column device wherein the safety in secondary collision is improved. SOLUTION: On the side forward a vehicle of a car body mounting section 10, a pair of flat plate-shaped support wall sections 12 and 12 are arranged, and on the side forward the vehicle of these flat plate-shaped support wall sections, a pair of column clamping and fixing sections 14 and 14 are arranged. Through this layout, in the secondary collision, the support wall section of a car body mounting bracket 4 and the column clamping and fixing sections 14 begin to move in the direction of rotating around the folding section 11 as fulcrum nearly horizontal. This direction nearly conforms to the input direction (nearly horizontal) of shock load F from the driver. Therefore, the start of the movement of the car body mounting bracket in the secondary collision can be stabilized. With a clamping lever 17 fixed to a clamping position, the gripping section 17b of the clamping lever 17 is arranged on the front side of the vehicle more than the base end section 17a, and since in the second collision, the clamping lever 17 is shifted forward the vehicle, the safety for driver's knee hitting can be improved.
