PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for measuring the load and displacement of a specimen comprising two components in both of a state where the two components are combined with each other and a state where they are separated from each other. SOLUTION: This material testing machine has an upper crosshead equipped with a load cell for detecting compressive load and/or tensile load on the specimen, an actuator for reciprocatingly driving a lower crosshead oppositely to the upper crosshead, a displacement gage for detecting the displacement of the specimen, a spring installed so as to extend/contract in proportion to the displacement of the specimen to enable the load cell to detect compressive load and/or tensile load owing to the extension/contraction, and in certain circumstances, a chuck for combining the specimen with the upper crosshead and/or the lower crosshead.
