PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lamp lighting device whereby a cycle to light a lamp is substantially shortened by forcibly switching off a trigger element such as a silicon symmetrical switch (SIDAC), and a projector using it. SOLUTION: This lamp lighting device is provided with an input-charge generating means to charge a capacitor by inputting a prescribed dc voltage, an trigger element switched on when an input-charge voltage obtained by the input-charge generating means reaches a prescribed voltage, an output-charge generating means to charge the capacitor based on the input-charge voltage obtained through the trigger element when the trigger element is switched on, a discharge gap where discharge is carried out when an output-charge voltage generated by the output-charge generating means reaches a prescribed rated voltage, an igniter to supply a pulse voltage signal to a lamp by generating it by a discharge voltage obtained when discharge is carried out at the discharge gap, and a switching means to switch off a line to input the input-charge voltage to the trigger element when the trigger element is switched on, on the input side of the trigger element.
