PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound which exhibits excellent lubricity under a wide environment range from an ordinary temperature environment to a high temperature high humidity environment. SOLUTION: This fluorine-containing compound represented by general formula (a). The compound has an ester absorption peak at 1740 cm-1in infrared absorption spectroscopy. A lubricant contains the compound. A magnetic recording medium contains the lubricant in a lubricating layer. The method for producing the magnetic recording medium includes a process using a coating liquid prepared by dissolving the lubricant in a specific solvent, to form the lubricant layer.
