To build an information processing system which can improve portability and convenience of personal digital assistants. According to the present invention, through communications between a pen-shaped instruction device and input/output apparatus, information stored in the instruction device can be transmitted to the input/output apparatus and displayed there while information displayed on the input/output apparatus can be transmitted to the instruction device and stored there. Thus, the instruction device need not have a display device and can constitute a compact personal digital assistant which is easy to take anywhere. Also, the input/output apparatus, which need not be portable, can be provided with appropriate functions and varied in size according to application.
