[Also in Divisions C3 and G2] The invention relates to ethylenically unsaturated derivatives of benzophenone of the general formula wherein -A- is -O- or -X is an ethylenically unsaturated group, and -R is hydrogen, an alkyl or an aryl radical. The compounds are prepared by reacting a benzophenone compound of the general formula wherein -B is -OH or -COOH and -R is hydrogen, an alkyl or an aryl radical, with the ethylenically unsaturated epoxy compound corresponding to the desired product, e.g. glycidyl acrylate or glycidyl methacrylate, the reaction being conducted at elevated temperatures and in the presence of one of the catalysts an alkali metal hydroxide, acetate or other alkali metal salt or a quaternary ammonium halide. Among many compounds claimed per se are (2- hydroxy-3-methacryloxy) propyl orthobenzoylbenzoate which is produced by reacting orthobenzoyl benzoic acid and glycidyl methacrylate; (2 - hydroxy - 3 - methacryloxy)propoxy parabenzoylbenzene which is produced by reacting parahydroxybenzophenone and glycidyl methacrylate.
