PURPOSE: A video communication system is provided to perform a selective image synthesis process by using other background image different from a substantial image of a user, and to transmit synthesized images, thereby protecting a user's privacy. CONSTITUTION: A video communication system(100) comprises as follows. An image input unit(101) inputs an image. A line processor(104) extracts an object region and a background region from the image. A mode decider(102) decides a setup condition of a user protection mode. An image synthesizer(105) synthesizes images by using alternative images for the object region and the background region. A coder(107) codes the synthesized images. A transmitter(108) transmits the coded images. A user interface(103) inputs the setup condition of the user protection mode. A background image storage(106) stores the alternative images.
