PURPOSE: A method for managing a fault of an OAM(Operation Administration and Maintenance) unit in an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network is provided to manage a fault for many VCs(Virtual Connections) of the ATM network in the OAM unit, thereby deteriorating OAM cell creation load of a CPU and enabling periodic cell creation in hardware method. CONSTITUTION: An ATM network sets cell processing sections according to kinds of OAM cells and connections(S310). The ATM network configures tables for accumulating fault information of an OAM unit every virtual path identifier(S320). The ATM network processes the OAM cells to be processed in each cell processing section(S330-S370). The ATM network updates the fault information of the OAM unit in the cell processing sections(S380). The cell processing sections are set by dividing one period into many sections according to AIS(Alarm Indication Signal) cells, RDI(Remote Defect Indication) cells, CC(Continuity Check) cells, and the connections. One section processes the AIS cells, and the other section processes the RDI cells, and another section processes the CC cells.
