Each frame member (1, 1') is assembled from two or more wooden components (2, 2', 3, 3', 4, 4') that are joined together by male and female tongue and groove couplings (5, 5', 6, 6') that leave gaps (7a, 7'a; 7b, 7'b) between the facing surfaces for the insertion of assembly elements. The frame members are preferably fixed together by mitred corner joints, with the assembly elements in the form of right-angled bars inserted into the gaps. The frame member components can be of different materials and subjected to separate treatments such as painting or coating.
