PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a layer of the visual angle characteristics of a VA type liquid crystal display device where 4 domains are formed in a picture element.

SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is provided with liquid crystal panels 91 and 92 where four domains are formed in a picture element, and first and second polarizing plates 11 and 15 arranged at both sides. It is also provided with at least one retardation film 96 which is arranged at least between a liquid crystal panel and the first polarizing plate or between the liquid crystal panel and the second polarizing plate, and when the refractive indexes of the inner surface direction are nxand ny, the refractive index of the thickness direction is nz, it has the relation of nx, ny≥nZ(except for nx=ny=nZ). Also, the lagging axis of the retardation film crosses at right angles with the absorption axis of the first or the second polarizing plate. The retardation of each inner surface direction of the retardation film is 250nm or less, the sum of retardation in the thickness direction is 1.7×RLC+50nm (RLCis the retardation of a liquid crystal cell) or less.
