PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance identification performance in a pattern identifying device for identifying a pattern of an identifying object such as a coin, based on an image of the identifying object acquired by an image pick-up means. SOLUTION: This device is provided with: an illumination means for emitting light to the identifying object passing through a passage; and the image pick-up means for photoreceiving reflected or transmitted light from the identifying object. An edge is detected faithfully to the pattern of the coin 23 by conducting coordinate transformation after detecting or intensifying the edge of the acquired image.
