A diffuser 430 includes an opening 432, or a plurality of openings 432 along the diffuser wall 434, which may be diverging, though which a secondary jet of air 448 is either drawn or blown from outside the diffuser 430, and directed along the inside of the wall 434 of the diffuser 430, thus preventing or delaying boundary layer separation of the main flow 444, maybe using the Coanda effect. There may also be a centre body 436 coaxially disposed within the diffuser 430, upon which at least one opening is disposed. Another embodiment involves directing gas from upstream of the diffuser, for example a turbine exit (172, fig 11), and blowing it into the diffuser (160, fig 11) to prevent separation. The apparatus, a method of using it, and its use with a turbine, more specifically a steam turbine are also disclosed. Another embodiment includes a down-flow exhaust hood (fig 28).
