Production of a 3-alkoxyphthalo dinitrile by reaction of a 3-nitrophthalo dinitrile with an alcohol in a solvent other than one of the reactants and in presence of a base is such that either: (a) the 3-nitrophthalo dinitrile and the base are provided in a solvent and the alcohol is then added; or (b) the alcohol and base are provided in a solvent and the 3-nitrophthalo dinitrile is then added. Production of a 3-alkoxyphthalo dinitrile of formula (I) by reaction of a 3-nitrophthalo dinitrile with an alcohol of formula ROH in a solvent other than one of the reactants and in presence of a base is such that either the 3-nitrophthalo dinitrile and the base are provided in a solvent and the alcohol is then added; or the alcohol and base are provided in a solvent and the 3- nitrophthalo dinitrile is then added. R = optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl.
