A 3-substitued 4-(phenyl-N-alkyl)-piperidine compound of formula 1 is described wherein: R1 is selected from CF3, CN, F, Cl, Br, I, OSO2CF3, OSO2CH3, SOR3, SO2R3, COCH3, COCH2CH3, COCH(CH3)2, NO2, CONHCH3 and CONHCH2CH3 R2 is selected from C1-C4 branched or unbranched alkyls, terminal allyls, CH2CH2OCH3, CH2CH2CH2F, CH2CF3, 3,3,3-trifluropropyl and 4,4,4-triflurobutyl R3 is selected from C1-C3 alkyls, CF3 and N(R2)2 wherein the compound does not have a high binding affinity to sigma receptors. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compound are useful for the treatment of a disorder in the central nervous system, a dopamine mediated disorder, movement disorders, tics, tremors, Tourette's disease, stuttering and other speech disorders, iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic Parkinsonism, dyskinesias and dystonias, iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic psychoses, hallucinoses, schizophrenia and schizophreniform disorders , mood and anxiety disorders, mono depressive illness, depression and obsessive-compulsive disease, neurodevelopmental and age related disorders and cognitive dysfunction such as attention-deficit disorders, autism disorders, bradykniesia and bradyphrenia, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, eating disorder, obestias, headaches, pain, substance related disorders, for the improvement of motor function, cognitive function and related emotional disturbances in neurodegenerative and developmental disorders and after brain injury induced by traumatic, toxic, inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, vascular hypoxic or metabolic causes.
