PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can prevent deterioration in image quality of a display image even when the device is used in any installation state by supplying an adequate writing gradation signal to a liquid crystal display panel by stopping an overshoot drive and varying the degree of enhancement of the overshoot drive according to the installation state of the device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device for displaying the image by using the liquid crystal display panel 4 is provided with an enhancement conversion section 22 which obtains an enhancement conversion signal for compensating the optical response characteristics of the panel 4 by subjecting an input image signal to enhancement conversion according to the combinations of gradation transitions before and after one vertical display period of the input image signal, installation state detecting means 18a and 18b which detect the installation state of the device, and a changeover switch 19 which selectively changes over either one of the enhancement conversion signal and the input image signal and supplies the signal as the writing gradation signal to the panel 4 based on the installation state of the detected device.
