PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it hard for a viewer to visually recognize a luminance error resulting from light modulation without lowering the intensity of output light. SOLUTION: For passage control over light outputted by driving a light source 2 by a light source driving circuit 1 which periodically generates an output variation point on the time base, a modulation controller 4 sets specified synchronous periods and set a plurality of unit periods differing in time length in the respective synchronous periods and the light passage control by a light passage controller 3 is carried out in each unit period. The modulation controller 4 selects a unit period, wherein it is predicted that a luminance error generated while an output variation point is included can not visually be recognized because of visual sensation characteristics of a human, out of the unit periods and performs arrangement control over the unit periods so that the output variation point is included in the selected unit period. Consequently, it is hard for the viewer to visually recognize an error of modulated output light without lowering the luminance of the modulated output light. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
