PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element in which the charge injection efficiency from a cathode to an organic membrane is improved. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element comprises a cathode and an electron injection layer that contains a metal oxide as expressed by a formula : MA<SB>x</SB>MB<SB>y</SB>O<SB>z</SB>between a luminous layer or the cathode and an electron transport layer. In the formula, MA expresses an alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal; MB expresses group 4 or group 5 metal; x expresses number of 1 or 2; y expresses number of 1 or 2; z expresses number of 2 or 3, respectively.
