PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high-strength carbon fibers with good productivity in production of a carbon fiber strand. SOLUTION: A precursor fiber strand for the carbon fibers comprises a finish oil containing a silicone compound, a nonsilicone heat-resistant resin and a compatibilizing agent and applied thereto. The finish oil has≥0.15 logarithmic damping factor of a rigid body pendulum and≥1.4 s<SP>-1</SP>reciprocal of vibration period at 145°C measured by a free damped oscillation method using the pendulum. A method for producing the precursor fiber strand for the carbon fibers comprises applying the finish oil to a water-swellable fiber strand obtained from an acrylic copolymer and then drying and compacting the fiber strand. In the method for producing the precursor fiber strand for the carbon fibers, the finish oil contains the silicon compound, nonsilicone liquid compound and compatibilizing agent and has≥0.15 logarithmic damping factor of the rigid body pendulum and≥1.4 s<SP>-1</SP>reciprocal of the vibration period at 145°C measured by the free damped oscillation method using the pendulum.
