PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which solves the problem of image defects caused by dielectric breakdown of an amorphous silicon photoreceptor and in which occurrence of image defects is effectively prevented particularly even when a toner image is transferred using a transfer roller. SOLUTION: The quantity Q (C/m<SP>2</SP>) of electric charges flowing from a transfer roller into the above photoreceptor during transfer of a toner image to a sheet of paper is set within a range of 6.5×10<SP>-4</SP><Q<2.1×10<SP>2</SP>/(the number of sheets on which printing is assured by the photoreceptor).
