PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of designing a die for a coating device having a die head main body of an extrusion type which permits uniform coating of a thin film with high accuracy on the surface of a substrate material using a low-viscosity coating liquid in particular and is adaptive to diversified coating objects and coating liquids and a coating device based on the design. SOLUTION: The method of designing the die for the coating device characterized by performing the three-dimensional flow calculation within the die by means of a computer based on at least coating liquid material data, coating condition data and the slit thickness distribution shape data to be designed, by performing the calculation recursive times while changing the slit thickness distribution shape data until the paint discharge rate distribution in the slit direction determined from the results of the calculation attains the optimum paint discharge rate distribution and by designing the die by determining the optimum slit thickness distribution complying with the coating liquid material and coating conditions and the coating device are provided.
