Multi-metal oxides containing molybdenum and vanadium also contain lanthanides, transition elements and/or Group 3-6 elements and have an X-ray diffraction pattern with lattice spacings (d(A)) as follows: 3.06 +/- 0.2; 3.17 +/- 0.2; 3.28 +/- 0.2; 3.28 +/- 0.2; 3.99 +/- 0.2; 9.82 +/- 0.4; 11.24 +/- 0.4; and 13.28 +/- 0.5. Multi-metal oxides containing molybdenum and vanadium also contain other metals and have an X-ray diffraction pattern with lattice spacings (d(A)) as follows: 3.06 +/- 0.2; 3.17 +/- 0.2; 3.28 +/- 0.2; 3.28 +/- 0.2; 3.99 +/- 0.2; 9.82 +/- 0.4; 11.24 +/- 0.4; and 13.28 +/- 0.5, the oxides being of formula (I); Aa(Mo5-b-cVbXcOd)1 (I); A = NH4, Na, K, Rb, Cs and/or Tl; X = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, Ga, In, C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se and/or Te; a = 0-1-1; b = 0.25-4.5; and c = 0-4.5, with the proviso that (b + c) at most 4.5. An Independent claim is also included for preparation of the above multi-metal oxide.
