PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article carrier adapted to retain freight and other articles adjacent a vehicular lift gate of a sports utility vehicle, a station wagon, a minivan or the like. SOLUTION: This article carrier for the vehicle comprises a lift gate striker connectable to the lift gate of the vehicle 12 and a bumper striker connectable to a bumper 34 of the vehicle 12. A first link is pivotally connected to a roof support structure of the vehicle. A second link is pivotally connected to the first link. A locking assembly is coupled to the second link, and is operable in a close position to couple the second link to the bumper striker. The locking assembly releases the bumper striker in response to contact from the lift gate striker in an opened position, thus the lift gate 12b can be immediately and conveniently lifted without the need to first unlatch the article carrier from the bumper.
