PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a benzothiazole derivative or a benzoxazole derivative on an industrial scale at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method for the production of a benzothiazole derivative or a benzoxazole derivative comprises the reaction of a 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole compound or a 2-hydrazinobenzoxazole compound with an oxidizing agent. The method is industrially advantageous because a benzothiazole derivative or a benzoxazole derivative having hydrogen atom substituted for 2-hydrazino group is easily producible in high yield by reacting an easily available 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole compound or 2-hydrazinobenzoxazole compound with an oxidizing agent, and furthermore, inexpensive and easily handleable hypochlorous acid, hydrogen peroxide solution, oxygen, etc., can be used as the oxidizing agent.
