PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a release mechanism of a printer in which a sheet can be carried surely by detecting a release state appropriately when a release lever is depressed and erroneous detection of the release state is prevented regardless of increase/decrease in the thickness of print sheets. SOLUTION: The release mechanism of a printer comprises a supporting member 20 movable to a carrying position where the supporting member presses a sheet feed roller 23 while supporting a sheet retaining roller 21 or to a release position where the supporting member separates from the sheet feed roller 23, a release lever 10 for moving the movable supporting member 20 from the carrying position to the release position by pressing the movable supporting member 20 from a first position separated by a first distanceαfrom the movable supporting member 20 and moving it to a second position, and a release detecting section 16 for detecting movement of the release lever 10 before touching the movable supporting member 20 when the release lever 10 is moved from the first position to the second position and outputting a release signal.
