To machine a workpiece (4), of a cast or sintered material, a rotating grinder is used as a hollow tool (7) to form a hole through the workpiece surface (37) as a drilling or a blind drilling. The grinding tool is excited by ultrasonics at the start of machining, or when the hole has reached a given depth. A channel (16) carries a coolant and also removes extracted workpiece material (13) from within the tool.
