PURPOSE: An apparatus for testing subscriber lines of an optical transmission system, and a method thereof are provided to test subscriber lines at a remote place. CONSTITUTION: An analog test unit(28) and a digital test unit(30) test a failure of a device(34) providing data and analog signals to a central office terminal and a remote terminal. A user panel(24) controls the analog test unit(28) and the digital test unit(30). A bank maintenance unit(32) connects the analog test unit(28) and the digital test unit(30) with subscriber lines. A bank control unit(26) controls the bank maintenance unit(32). A main control unit(22) appropriately distributes a command of an operator for performing a test. A data communication unit(20) provides a communication channel used when the operator tests remote terminal subscribers at the central office terminal.
