<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image encoding method and an image decoding method for appropriately correlating a weight coefficient even when a field and a frame are switched in a block unit. <P>SOLUTION: A weight coefficient mode judging part 13 discriminates whether the mode is a field mode or a frame mode on the basis of a value of a flag "AFF" indicating whether the field and the frame are to be switched in the block unit, and notifies switches 14, 15 and a multiplexing part 106 of the discriminated mode. In accordance with the reported mode, the switches 14, 15 selects either the field or the frame.
