PURPOSE: An engine control device and a method of a diesel vehicle are provided to secure stability for engine behavior by correcting the RPM(Revolution per Minute) of an engine by applying an idle RPM map table and a map table for the vehicle speed if a signal of an accelerator pedal sensor is abnormal. CONSTITUTION: An engine control method of a diesel vehicle is composed of steps for deciding if the RPM of an engine is over a set reference RPM under the idle state of the vehicle(S103); deciding if the vehicle speed is over a reference speed when the RPM of the engine is over the reference RPM(S104); controlling to displacement of an accelerator pedal if the idle RPM and the vehicle speed satisfy the reference values(S105); detecting the displacement of the accelerator pedal from an idle RPM map by regarding the signal of the accelerator pedal as abnormal if the engine RPM is below the reference RPM; detecting the displacement of the accelerator pedal by applying an idle speed map if the vehicle speed is below the reference speed; and computing a larger value by comparing a previous RPM region and a vehicle speed region for the detected displacement of the accelerator pedal, deciding the displacement of the accelerator pedal according to the value, outputting a control value from a map table to the decided displacement of the accelerator pedal, and then applying the control value to the correction of the engine(S110,S111,S112).
