PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize acceleration of reading processing of a monochromatic image while keeping high quality of an image and without causing a marked cost increase. SOLUTION: In a fast monochromatic reading mode, in line CCDs 37b and 37c among line CCDs 37a to 37c corresponding to the respective colors of R, G and B being the three primary colors of additive color mixture, the periods ofϕ1b,ϕ2b, 1c and 2c for determining the output timing of accumulated electric charge for each pixel of shift registers 302b and 302c are made to be 1/2 of the periods of clamp pulsesϕCLb and CLc for determining the output timing of accumulated electric charge of gates 303b and 303c to give a difference for one pixel to reading timing from the line CCD 37b and that from the line CCD 37c.
