PURPOSE: A method for preparing 4-isopropoxy-4'-hydroxydiphenyl sulfone is provided, to improve the reaction selectivity to monoether, to reduce reaction time and to lower reaction temperature. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of reacting the alkyl sulfate represented by the formula 2 with the bisphenol S represented by the formula 3 to obtain the 4-isopropoxy-4'-hydroxydiphenyl sulfone represented by the formula 1. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of at least one base selected from the group consisting of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, alkali metal carbonates and alkaline earth metal carbonates and/or an amine selected from the group consisting of triethylamine, trimethylamine, imidazole, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyrazine and pyridazine. Preferably the reaction is carried out in a solvent mixture comprising acetone and an alcohol in the ratio of 1:1 by volume.
