PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handle so that an operator can easily ascend/descend in a stable state between ground and a top surface of an upper structure, and to prevent malfunctions such that the handle is a hindrance by hitting against a peripheral object and the operator and such that mud and the like, which adhere to a crawler, adhere to the handle, when a hydraulic excavator is provided with the handle for being held during the ascent/descent of the operator between the ground and the top surface of the upper structure in maintenance operations and the like. SOLUTION: A recess 6b is formed in a right side surface 6a of a storage chamber, which forms a side surface of the upper structure 2, and the handle 17 for being held by the operator during the ascent/descent is provided in the recess 6b in such a manner as not to protrude outward from the surface 6a.
