A therapeutic and/or prophylactic drug for cardiac failure and cardiac hypertrophy, comprising a derivative of hydroxamic acid, which is represented by the formula (I) <CHEM> (wherein R<1> represents a halogen atom, C1-8 alkyl, or C1-8 alkyl substituted with -OR<2>, in which R<2> presents a halogen atom, C1-8 alkyl, benzil, or C1-8 alkyl substituted with C1-8 alkoxy(s)), or a non-toxic salt thereof. <??>This inventive compound represented by the formula (I) has the inhibitory effect of matrix metalloproteinase, and is effective to cardiac failure and cardiac hypertrophy.
