A method is provided for determining an individual's risk for osteoarthritis or risk for knee joint space narrowing, development of osteophytes, or risk for an increase in knee joint space narrowing and osteophytes over, comprising detecting the presence of an osteoarthritis-associated OAPROGI allele in a nucleic acid sample of the individual, wherein the presence of said allele indicates the individual's risk for osteoarthritis susceptibility and risk for knee joint narrowing, and risk for and increase in knee joint narrowing over time. |
