A shoe is disclosed having a foot-receiving enclosure defined by a sole and an upper. The shoe comprises a unitary air chamber 20 having a sole limb within the sole and a heel limb within a rear wall of the foot-receiving enclosure. At least the sole limb of the air chamber is elastically compressible from a relaxed configuration to a compressed configuration. A unidirectional inlet valve 30 allows the passage of air from the exterior of the shoe into the heel limb of the air chamber, an exit orifice 22 allows the passage of air from the sole limb of the air chamber into the foot-receiving enclosure, and an outlet 40 in the upper allows air within the foot-receiving enclosure to escape from the shoe. In use, compression of the air chamber causes air to be pumped into the foot-receiving enclosure through the exit orifice, and return of the air chamber to the relaxed configuration causes air to be drawn into the air chamber through the inlet valve 30. A spring (50, 52) may be located within the sole limb of the air chamber 20 and acts at the heel of the shoe.
