The method involves operating the gas discharge lamp at least partly with a direct voltage component (3) with superimposed voltage pulses (1). The lamp is operated in the upper intensity range with direct voltage, direct voltage with superimposed pulses or preferably high frequency alternative voltage and in the lower intensity range with direct voltage and superimposed pulses or just with voltage pulses.
